| Hello, I have a Lombard that has been upgraded with a G4 board. I have the MacSpeed Control installed and am running OS X10.3.9. There are 256mb chips in both memory slots. Every thing is fine except it won't wake up if the computer falls asleep. I read that the MacSpeed Control solves this problem. I guess not. Any suggestions?

Hello, I have a Lombard that has been upgraded with a G4 board... it won't wake up if the computer falls asleep.
Although the Lombard G4 upgrade may manifest the issue, there are most likely other problems.... Note the RAM, Drive and OS9 Driver issues below, which manifest as the inability to sleep in many cases.
When upgrading the Lombard’s RAM, Drive and Software...
There are three issues to be aware of. The first being an issue of RAM during the installation of Panther. The second being the issue of installed drivers and the third being the compatibility of some ATA based drives.
Lombard (PowerBook G3 Series 1999/USB) Upgrading and RAM
While the Lombard officially is limited to only 384 MB of RAM, it easily supports 512 MB total RAM.
Make sure that the 2-256’s are programmed as low capacity components with the correct cache latency settings. Many vendors sell Lombard/iMac specific RAM (as do we). You need to beware of any vendors that sell ‘cheaper’ Lombard RAM which will also work in the Pismo or PowerBook G4.
The trick is to find a vendor that you can trust. The Lombard 256s use older more expensive parts and, as a rule of thumb will cost 20-30% more than similar PC133 RAM.
Panther installs do have issues with large amounts of RAM.
You will need to remove the top DIMM during installation. Otherwise, the installation will lock up in the middle of the process. Once installed, you can replace the DIMM without any issues. Also note: that Disk Utility will only run permissions correctly when booted from the Mac OS X install disk.
Lombard (PowerBook G3 Series 1999/USB) OS 9 Drivers
We have noted that the OS9 drivers installed by the OS X disk utility can have problems in Sleep mode and when the PMU is reset.
To avoid this issue, simple finish all installations by booting to your OS9.2 disk and using the Drive Setup to update the driver on the drive (you will get a warning that the driver being installed is older than the driver currently installed).
Tip: when creating a fresh drive, install OSX first. Then boot to the OS9 CD and install OS9. You will have to select ‘clean install’ to proceed... This does not effect the OSX install at all.
If you are currently experiencing the dreaded ‘prohibitive sign’ trying to boot to your OSX system, then:
+ Boot to the OS9.2 Install CD (hold ‘c’ key at boot). Note: In some situations, to boot from the CD you may need to zap PRAM a couple times by holding the ‘apple-option-p-r’ keys for two chimes.
+ Once booted, open Utilities/Drive Setup and select your drive.
+ Select Update Drivers from the Menu.
+ Click to proceed.
+ Open the Startup Disk Control Panel.
+ Select to boot from the Mac OS9 Install CD.
+ Reboot to the CD.
+ Open the Startup Disk Control Panel and select your drive for boot.
Lombard (PowerBook G3 Series 1999/USB) Newer ATA Drives
Some newer versions of Toshiba and IBM drives, are not fully compatible with the Lombard. Check with your vendor.

Thanks for the info. I have a follow up question. I have 256 mb low profile ram chips installed on the G4 cpu board. I do not have OS 9.x installed. I have a 100 GB 7200 rpm Hitachi Ata Hard Drive (new) installed. My question is , does it matter if OS X 10.3.x is installed before the G4 CPU upgrade is installed in the Lombard. I put in the 100GB hard drive and installed OS X 10.3.9 into the original PowerBook with the G3 board. No sleep issues.
Should I reinstall the OS X 10.3.9 onto the Lombard with the G4 board already in place. Should I have OS X 9.2.2 installed also? Should I leave the upper ram chip out if this is what to do.
