I have a Gigabit Ethernet (2XAGP) Powermac G4. I upgraded the processors through you guys and everything works great!

I'm looking to upgrade my videocard because my Rage 128 pro is getting pretty outdated with some of the applications I'm trying to run.

I see that daystar sells a:

Radeon 9200:

And also a Radeon 9800 Pro Edition:

My concern is that I'm trying to buy more than what my sytem can handle. I'd like to get the 9800 because it seems like a nicer card but my Mac only has a 220 watt power supply. (the 9800 recomends 300watts for optimal performance). I've been burned on one card through a different retailer already and would REALLY appreciate a responce.

Am I just wanting more than what my old G4 should take or would the 9200 be the best one to go with. I posted this in another section and didn't get a reply so if that is a no-no I'm sorry and it won't happen again.

Hi and sorry I missed the other post. The forum should be notifying us on every post, but somehow, missed some...

The 9800 Pro 2x/4x will work in your system. It has the advantage of fully supporting Quartz Extreme and Core Video and Core Image. These are all going to play a big part in the upcoming release of Leapord and it's 3D interfaces in iTunes, Time Machine and thoughout the new OS. The card has the ability to allow the intensive functions to processes on the video card, taking the load off of the CPUs.

The bad news is that the card is being update to ROHS compliance (no -lead) and continues to lag in production as AMD (new owner of ATI) tries to get its act together. The last ETA on these was 1/10 :(

The 9200 is available, but will not have the advantages for core video as indicated with the 9800 above.

So even though according to MacTracker my Gigabit Ethernet Power Supply is a measly 220 watt the 9800 will still work for my computer ok?

I wish system profiler would tell me for sure how much wattage my power supply actually is because I have a bit of a "franken-mac." I bought some upgraded processors through you guys and I have some other non-OEM hardware.

I want the 9800 card (even if I have to wait a bit for it) but I don't want to buy it if my power supply can't handle it. I guess if I had to I could upgrade my power supply as well if I can find the right one that will work but that seems a bit extreme just to get a vid card upgrade.

I want to keep this computer for at least another 1.5-2 years so I need it for the long haul otherwise I'd just pick up the 9200.

Thanks for he qucik reply and for the help thus far. :)

Any word when this card will be available? It's listed as not being in stock.

We are still waiting to see if AMD will ever stock/ship the 9800 cards.

:(
