Gary, has there been any consideration to providing G3 iBook CPU upgrades (if any) or repairs for the infamous video-chip-cold-solder problem ?
I was wondering if a pass through a reflow or hot air oven would fix the cold solder joint problem that has plagued the ibook series.
thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Yes, a reflow fixes about 60% of the video issues.
A CPU upgrade is also possible.
The problem is primarily labor. with iBooks being an hour in and an hour out... and the cost of technician labor for the reflow (and or upgrade), the product just doesn't fly.

!!!!!!! Finally SOMEONE admits to trying this ! I knew this wasnt a crazy idea !
So, just for the sake of argument, how much would you charge for this service if I sent some naked motherboards to you ? No disassembly/assembly required.
.....and just for the sake of curiosity, are the G3 ibooks (750 FX ?) upgradable to G4 ?
thanks,
Tom

For what its worth, First Phase Tech on Ebay offers a repair service for this problem. You send the motherboard in and $50, and they fix it. Their record is quite good (2 for 2 for me, and 4 for 4 for someone else I know).
