| Why is the MachSpeed G4 upgrade only for Powerbooks 15" and 17"? I have a 12" and would like to get an upgrade. Greetings from Mirko, Netherlands Last edited on Wed Feb 15th, 2006 09:51 pm by sixdaysago

Hi,
Well, actually we can upgrade the 12". The problem is in labor costs. The 12" PowerBook requires an extra 2 hours. Cost is $649... so we chose not to advertise it... yet.
Edited, now $359 -- 9/26/07Last edited on Wed Sep 26th, 2007 01:28 pm by Gary

Please let me know if you do plan to support upgrading the 867MHz PowerBook G4 Aluminum and your timeline if so. We have some in-house and a lot of clients that would use the service.

We are getting much closer on the PowerBook 12" 867 MHz Aluminum, The 17" 1 GHz, the PowerBook Titanium 800 and 667 MHz PowerBook CPU Upgrades.
All of these system use a CPU which is going to limited in top speed... but will still be a substaintial upgrade in performance.
The upgrade is 1.33 GHz and will be retail priced at $399. We are handling pre-release upgrades of these units now (4-7 days to upgrade and test) at a cost of $299!
Send me a direct note if you are interested.

Hello Gary, i have two questions about the upgrade of my 12" powerbook.
First, i live in mexico, and to me is very difficult actualy almost imposible to send my powerbook too you, is it possible to me to make the upgrade by myself?, i´m not a geek but i have some technical knowledge.
second, is there going to be another faster upgrade to the 12" powerbook?
something like 2.0 ghz.
Finally, do you have some technical information about how fast is this upgrade against a macbook pro?
Well, thank you for your time, have a nice week.

Sorry but no. This upgrade is performed directly on the logic board, and also, the 12" is a 'bear' to get in and out of. Not something to attempt, unless you are an expert at PowerBooks/iBooks.

The limitation on the 12" is cooling capacity and its power supply. We keep the power requirements at the standard 12" rate which allows the system to run at full speed without A/C and perform with no thermal or power drawbacks whatsoever. For this reason we are limited to the 1.4 GHz speed on the 12" (867 Mhz) and 1.67 GHz on the 1 GHz and faster.
Finally, do you have some technical information about how fast is this upgrade against a macbook pro?
It performs on par in 'non-unversal applications like Photoshop. It si about half the speed in universal applications. BUT it is nearly twice the speed of the original 867, or 1GHz system that you own now.
Well, thank you for your time, have a nice week.

Hi Gary,
I'm very excited to finally have an affordable option for upgrading my 867mHz 12" G4 Powerbook.
I have two questions about additional upgrade desires. When I bought my 12" after it first came out, they only had 512MB RAM chips, so at the time, to max out your RAM, 640MB were the limit (512 plus the built-in 128MB of RAM). They've long since come out with a 1GB version of the same RAM, but I read somewhere that 640 was still the maximum allowed on this version/model 12" laptop. Do you know if that's correct, or could I finally upgrade my RAM to 1GB as well as upgrading the processor, or am I fated to stay at 640MB RAM until I buy a new laptop?
Also, is it at all possible to upgrade the graphics chip to anything higher than the 32MB graphics card that was factory installed? Game play on my laptop as it's currently configured is frustratingly limited to very low frame rates and visual detail. Even upgrading to 64MB would be a world of difference. Or is the graphics card too integrated to the motherboard, etc. to be able to change it?
Thanks for any information you can provide,
Jim

Sorry, that was a mistake. The 1.5 models require the system multiplier to be integer based, which elimates the ability to run at 1.75.

| Sorry, the 12" is limited by its lack of cooling ability.
