I just installed Leopard from the patched disk, and it dies at the grey apple screen. It won't start up. Any ideas. I zapped the PRam 3 times and reset all the firmware to defauts.
UPDATE: I decided to try the option to totally erase the hard drive and install it. That worked fine. Once rebooted, I am able to transfer everything from the backup I made on a firewire drive. For some reason, it would not do an upgrade install. So anyone else trying this, be sure to make a backup of your hard drive.

Hmm... well the post is lacking a bit in information. Next time you get stuck on a spinning wheel, then reboot but hold the command and v key down. This will give a text screen that tells you what has loaded and where it is hanging.
It would be interesting to note if you are talking about it hanging after it has completed the install and rebooted. And, did you do an Archive and Install (Recommended to get rid of any incompatible third party Kext files).

Well, I'm pretty sure it never finished the install. The thing takes so long, I wasn't there when it rebooted itself. I assumed it had finished.
But when I installed it with the option to erase the whole disk, it displayed a screen that said it was successful. I didn't know what the "arhive and install " meant so I didn't use that one. Good to know for future reference.
Anyway, it turns out, several programs that I have to use and can't afford to upgrade don't run on Leopard . . . so this entire exercise was a waste of time. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestions.

As it turns out. The easiest way to install Leopard on a slower PowerBook, or Power Mac or upgraded system, is to simply use the free "Leopard Assist" from LowEnd Mac.
You can download it at: http://daystartechnology.com/leopardassist/

I also own an updated 17" Powerbook and am running into problems installing Leopard. I used the patched disk, and also tried the software from lowendmac, but no luck. It keeps freezing at the grey apple screen. Any idea how to troubleshoot this?

| From the email, it looks like your airport Flex has popped loose, under the memory door on the back.
